From Hollywood to Hats

When the 2020 COVID lockdown put the brakes on her career as an actress, Libby Munro decided to take her creativity in a whole new direction.

The result was Bluegrass Hat Co. – bespoke hat-making by Libby in her funky backyard studio in Brisbane’s Norman Park.

Libby learned her craft from a Sunshine Coast milliner and then launched her own venture – fashioning customized and individually designed Fedoras.

She created her own signature “Hollywood” line – honouring silver screen greats like Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart and Elizabeth Taylor.

Since then, Libby’s been commissioned to create personalized chapeaux for a variety of local celebrities – including footballer, Sam Thaiday and cricket legend, Matthew Hayden.

Libby works with her patrons to create a hat that reflects their personal style and character – often incorporating beloved symbols or cherished items into the design.

Both Hollywood glamour and good-old fashioned country life are palpable in Libby’s work – she grew up on a cattle property west of Charleville, losing her Dad when she was only young.

Libby’s father was a 4th generation cowboy who loved guns, motorbikes, horses and mustering.

“When I decided to create this hat company, we  wanted a name and identity for the brand,” explains Libby.

“I was talking to my Mum about it… and the first name she gave me was Bluegrass.

“I googled it and the father of Bluegrass music is Bill Munro… And my real father’s name is William Munro!

“And I just went – if that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is!  When I think about it, I still get goosebumps… and I think it’s a beautiful homage to him.”

Check out Libby’s handiwork on her website and Instagram page and get in touch if you’d like a bespoke hat created for you or a loved one.
