Boggo Road Gaol

For over 119 years, Boggo Road Jail in Brisbane was Australia’s most notorious prison. Filled with some of the country’s most infamous felons.

Some of the prison’s more well-known inmates include the “Houdini of Boggo Road” escapologist and jail-breaker “Slim” Halliday and the Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub fire-bombers James Richard Finch and John Andrew Stuart.

In the 1980s Boggo Road was the scene of dramatic escapes, riots, hunger-strikes and roof-top protests which led to the prison’s official closure 26 years ago in July 1992.

Today it’s a popular tourist attraction that offers a range of tours. The history tour looks at the crimes and daily life of prisoners. It includes a visit to the cell of legendary ‘Slim’ Halliday. The tour runs for 1 hour 15 minutes.

The Prisoner Tour shows what life was like behind bars and it’s led by a former prisoner. It gives a fascinating insight that no other tour can give.

The officer tour is led by a former officer and gives even more fascinating insight.

Boggo Road also offers ghost tour at night which are a very popular.

Another great addition to Boggo Road are its movie nights where they show prison themed movies like “Shawshank Redemption” on the big screen in the prison’s courtyard.
