Father’s Day on the Redlands Coast

The Redlands Coast is teaming with great activities, and with Father’s Day just around the corner, we’ve gathered a couple of options to keep Dad happy.

13 Axes is located in Cleveland and is sensibly an indoor venue where would-be axe wielders get to test their throwing arm in a controlled environment.

“I sort of put it together like ten pin bowling and darts because you get to throw something really nice and sharp and fun and you get to stand there and enjoy the family aspect of toying and yelling and cheering at the same time,” said owner Jason Lake.

He really hit the bullseye with this place. It’s a family affair with wife Sammi and daughter Emmy on board. In fact it was a gift from Sammi that started the whole thing.

“My wife surprised me one day at another venue and I loved it,” Jason said. “Couple weeks later do you want to go back down? And I went or I could build one in the backyard!”

From there fate took over when Jason lost his job to Covid and without hesitation his backyard project became the full blown venue it is today, built with Jason’s own two hands.

If hurling sharp objects doesn’t do it for you, or Dad, not to worry, just next door more of Jason’s handiwork is on display at the miniature golf course.

“Thirteen holes, it goes from easy, medium to hard, it’s just for everybody as long as you’re old enough to pick up a club, you can play mini golf as well.”

From mini golf to the grown up variety, North Stradbroke Island Golf Club is just over the bay from Cleveland, a quick ferry ride away.

The view from the club are second to none, stretching out to Redland Bay and Brisbane, even as far as the Glasshouse Mountains on a clear day.

They’re views Myles Seymour never tires of.

“It’s a nine hole course, but with 18 tees and the tees are significantly different so you’re challenged even though it’s going to the same green,” Myles explained. “So it feels like you’re playing 18.”

Aside from golf, the nature and wildlife on the course plays an equal part in the overall experience.

“The local kangaroos, we often have families come out to have a cart and come down to see the kangaroos in the afternoon or in the morning which is really great.”

Myles is a pro in the kitchen as he’s a classically trained chef, hence the name of the on-site restaurant, Bistro Seymour.

“I’ve tried to do something for everyone,” he explained. “For someone who’s just wanting a snack after golf to a dining experience so it’s a bit eclectic.”

Some menu examples include Moroccan spiced Red Emperor fillet with a pearl cous cous and chickpea salad, garlic pesto prawns with thin egg pasta, smokey tomato, snow pea and Reggiano and Myles’ signature dish, the char-grilled rib fillet!

“I’m very lucky,” said Myles. “I buy the majority of all my produce from the island, Rufus King and the butchers here.”

Enjoy your meal and a drink from the bistro balcony, with those sweeping views ahead of you and you don’t even have to worry about how to get home!

“We’ll even run you down with our shuttle bus so you can have a couple on the deck and don’t even have to worry about driving.”
