In Queensland, we are very lucky to have an abundance of fantastic experiences right on our doorstep. From the city to the coast, and out to the country, Queensland’s diverse landscape lends itself to a wide range of exciting and fascinating experiences. If you’re an adrenaline-junkie, or simply someone wanting to see more of the State, here are five experiences that we think every Australian should give a go.
1. Float over the Scenic Rim
There’s no better way to see an area than by getting up high, and that is why we can’t recommend hot air ballooning enough. In south-east Queensland, Floating Images offers a remarkable experience; gliding over Ipswich, the Scenic Rim and Somerset region. Float up, up and away and take in breathtaking 360-degree views of the area.

2. Visit Lawn Hill Gorge
Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park is a natural wonder, tucked away in north-west Queensland. The Gorge is an oasis against the outback landscape, with its’ stunning orange sandstone cliffs and emerald green waters seeming like a mirage to travellers. This breath-taking landmark is a must-visit in our books!
Kay McGrath recently went on the ultimate road-trip adventure along Savannah Way Drive and stopped in at the Gorge. Check out her trip here.
3. Go jungle surfing in Cape Tribulation
If you love adventure, what could be better than zip-lining above the canopy of the Daintree Rainforest? Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours offer a unique experience, allowing you to see the rainforest from every angle as you glide above and through it. If you have an appetite for adventure, then this is the activity for you!
Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for more ideas about what to do in and around Cape Tribulation.
4. Swim in a lake fed entirely by rainwater
Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island is a special sight to see, as it is a perched lake, meaning it contains only rainwater. Unlike most lakes, Lake McKenzie is not fed by any groundwater, the ocean or any streams. The pure silica sand on the bottom of the lake forms an impervious layer and stops the water from draining away, all while filtering it to keep it looking crystal clear. It’s truly a magnificent phenomenon.

5. Hang out with over 2000 butterflies in Kuranda

There are not many places more magical than the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda. The sanctuary is home to more than 2000 beautiful tropical butterflies, whom of which you can get up close and personal within the aviary’s enchanting rainforest gardens. Wear something bright when you visit the sanctuary if you want to encourage a butterfly to land on you.
To make your experience even more special, why not travel on the Kuranda Scenic Railway to the sanctuary. Check out Luke and Cody’s journey to the town here.
