Girraween Bush Walk

Southern Queensland is beautiful any time of year but it’s especially alluring in winter time. The cooler weather makes it the ideal time to enjoy the region’s amazing national parks.

One of the most striking is Girraween National Park. The park has 17kms of walking tracks ranging from short strolls to an 11km return hike to Mount Norman.

Girraween is an aboriginal word that means ‘place of flowers’. During warmer months, wildflowers decorate the landscape. In winter, walkers can enjoy the imposing granite structures.

The most well-known is the Pyramid. Walkers can climb it on a 3.6km return hike that takes about two hours. Near the top walkers can try and ‘shove’ the giant balancing rock. It’s also a popular place for a selfie or photo.

The Pyramid and other granite features in the park are the result of volcanic activity hundreds of millions of years ago.

Nearby, the Girraween Country Inn offers accommodation and it’s a great base for exploring the region.

It offers King and Queen rooms with super comfy beds and there’s plenty of space for families in the Twin Room.

There’s also a restaurant on site, The Spotted Quoll. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, and serves delicious breakfasts for staying guests.
