How an Empty Drink Container Can Do Good for the Environment and Those in Need

You might be familiar with the Containers for Change movement; a recycling initiative that offers a 10c refund for every eligible container returned to a refund point.

While you can choose to pocket your profits, there is also the option to donate your dollars to a worthy cause. More than 6,000 charities and community groups are registered with Containers for Change, so you’re bound to find an organisation that resonates with you.

As they say, ‘from little things, big things grow’. Since the initiative started in 2018, more than $10 million from container refunds have been donated to charities in Queensland alone.

Animal sanctuary, Happily Heifer After is one of those charities that has experienced first-hand the benefits of these generous donations. The farm is a haven for mistreated, neglected and abandoned farm animals. “Without these donations we can’t continue this work.,” explained Happily Heifer After’s founder Michelle.

“We simply can’t say yes when these animals need our help. Without donations, we can’t save lives and with donations, we can.”

Michelle and her team run regular tours where visitors can cuddle some of the residents and learn about the lifesaving work the team does.

Being able to help charities like Michelle’s, whilst taking care of the environment is a win, win! So, the next time you rock up to a refund point with a stash of containers, we hope you’ll consider paying it forward.
