How to Spend a Day in Kuranda

Kuranda is a beautiful, quaint village near Cairns, tucked away up in the mountains. With an abundance of things on offer in the town, it is a town that we can guarantee you will fall in love with.

One of the best ways to get to Kuranda is by the Kuranda Scenic Railway – a spectacular train ride through the rainforest from Cairns. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, but trust us, you will not be bored. With views of the rainforest and spectacular waterfalls, you will be glued to the window watching the scenery whiz past.

Once you are in the town, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is a must-visit. The sanctuary is home to over 2000 tropical butterflies, making it the largest butterfly aviary and exhibit in the Southern Hemisphere. In the sanctuary, you can walk through beautiful rainforest gardens and let the butterflies fly around you. Be sure to wear something colourful when visiting the sanctuary if you want to encourage a butterfly to come close.

If you still feel like seeing more wildlife, why not head to Birdworld. At Birdworld, you can get up close and personal with over 80 species of birds in their beautiful rainforest habitat. From lorikeets to macaws to cassowaries, you can be sure you will see some fascinating and beautiful birds at the sanctuary.

Climb aboard a Kuranda Riverboat tour for a beautiful tropical rainforest river cruise. The cruise is both relaxing and informative, and a fantastic way to see the rainforest from a different angle. You might even spot a crocodile on the tour!

For those with a sweet tooth, the Kuranda Candy Kitchen is an important stop! Spend a while indulging in a treat, or two, and checking out how old-fashioned candy is made. Not only is it a tasty experience, but it is also an interesting one!

Before you leave Kuranda, be sure to pop into to the Markets. The Kuranda Markets are open every day of the year and are spread over two locations. With Aboriginal artefacts, souvenirs, art, leather goods and jewellery on offer, there is definitely something for everyone. Grab an ice cream at Gelocchio in the Heritage Markets if you still have room for something sweet.
