Acclaimed landscape and country music photographer John Elliott grew up in Blackall, in Outback Queensland. His passion for photography started at a young age and the stories of the country have always inspired his work.
He’s carved an impressive career as a photographer, writer and traveller – capturing people’s stories with his camera and pen.
John has compiled Australia’s most extensive country music photo library. He was Slim Dusty’s photographer for over 25 years and holds a special place in his heart for the country-music legend.
John has always been drawn to country music.
“The words are really important in most country songs and I think it’s the stories and the words that drew me to the country”
John still calls the country home and is an advocate for the town of Winton, 2 hours West of Longreach. He is incredibly passionate about the Outback, loves sharing stories and especially loves showing off his town.
“I love getting in my car and driving two minutes out of town, and all that stuff that people pay to come and visit, it’s on our doorstep in Winton. It’s the big open skies, the freedom and we get a big sunset every day of the year, and I love that.”
Catch John on Queensland Weekender next week, when he shows Sammie O’Brien around his favourite spots in Winton.
