Hervey Bay is the playground of Humpback whales – a pitstop on their annual 10 thousand kilometre round trip between chilly Antarctic seas to tropical Queensland waters.
To the delight of thousands of tourists, these wondrous marine creatures pause to rest a while as they undertake the planet’s longest mammal migration.
A half-day whale-watching tour with Tasman Venture puts you slap bang in the middle of the action – surrounded by whales breaching, tail slapping, spy hopping and generally having a watery blast.
Their antics are a huge hit with spectators – especially little conservationists taking part in the Junior Whale Warrior Program.
Armed with green caps and bags filled with educational goodies – from booklets to record whale behavior, to take-home mini whale models – these green guardians of tomorrow learn to better understand and admire Humpback whales and other marine life.
The program is in partnership with a local conservation group and was conceived by Vicki Neville, a veteran of Tasman Venture. Vicki has just notched up 25 years’ service as a naturalist and guide with the whale watching operator.
For a whale experience that the whole family will remember forever, head to Fraser Coast during whale watch season, from July to November.
