When you think of Northern New South Wales, the bustling streets Byron Bay probably pop to mind, but the region is home to so much more. Next time you visit the region, set your GPS for one of these gorgeous lesser-known spots.
Head into the hinterland for lunch
Looking for a restaurant in the Northern Rivers region? Jump in your car and head into the hills! In Federal, you will find Doma, a Japanese restaurant so special that it has even garnered the interest of the New York Times. Here you can find everything from dandelion lattes and delicious cakes, to Japanese-inspired halloumi burgers and sushi. It’s a beautiful place to sit outdoors and enjoy the day.
Swim in an abandoned rock quarry
Around two hours south from Byron Bay, you can find the tiny town of Angourie, just outside of Yamba. Angourie is a great place to slip away for a relaxing weekend. If a lazy weekend isn’t quite your style though, the town’s iconic Blue and Green Pools are the perfect place to get your blood pumping. It is best to visit Angourie in the cooler months, as the warmer weather can often cause the pools to be closed due to algae blooms. Be sure to check if the pools are open before you visit.
Get cultured at the Tweed Regional Art Gallery
For art-lovers, the Tweed Regional Art Gallery in Murwillumbah is a must-visit. The Tweed Regional Art Gallery is home to seven exhibition rooms, including the Margaret Olley Art Centre, where you can even find a recreation of her studio home. The incredible views of Mount Warning are worth a visit alone.
Escape the hustle and bustle of Byron Bay’s beaches
If you find Byron Bay’s beaches a little too crowded, pack up your beach gear and head to one of the many other beautiful beaches in the area. For a relaxing dip in beautiful calm waters, visit Torakina Beach in Brunswick Heads. Or, for a splash in the surf, head to New Brighton Beach for kilometres of secluded coastline.
