Queensland by Rail

Holiday packages are a great way to make the most of your getaway and if you’re planning on travelling by train, Queensland Rail Travel have a range of options for you to choose from.

If you’re wanting to explore Queensland’s east coast, we recommend the Southern Coastal Rail Explorer. It’s an 8-day adventure on board the Spirit of Queensland. The journey kicks off in Cairns and hugs the coastline south to Brisbane.

Day 1: Cairns to Tully

Board the Spirit of Queensland in the morning and enjoy the beautiful landscapes as you travel from Cairns to Tully. Once you arrive, you’ll make your way to your accommodation in Mission Beach. Stay the next 3 nights at Castaways Resort and Spa.

Day 2: Dunk Island

Take a 10-minute ride on the water taxi to Dunk Island – a piece of tropical paradise. Here you can choose spend the day however you like. Relax on the beach, follow a walking trail or laze back at the Sunset Bar.

Day 3: Mission Beach

Today you’ll have the day to explore Mission Beach at your leisure. There’s plenty to do at this beachside town. You could pay a visit to Paronella Park – a must visit castle in the jungle, or take a trip out to the reef with Mission Beach Dive.

Day 4: Tully to Proserpine

From Tully, you’ll re-join the Spirit of Queensland and travel south for the day to Proserpine. While on board, you’ll enjoy the perks of your Premium Economy Seat.  Watch a movie, hang out in the Club Car or simply take in the everchanging view! Arrive in Proserpine in the early evening and take a RailBus Coach Connection to your accommodation. Included in your package is 3 nights at the Airlie Beach Hotel, a perfect spot to base yourself when exploring the Whitsundays!

Day 5: Whitehaven Beach

Day 5 brings a sailing adventure! Included in your package is a day on board the heritage yacht, Lady Enid. Gently sail to Whitehaven Beach, located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. As you make your way there you’ll have the option to jump in and snorkel around a selected coral reef. Once you arrive at Whitehaven, you can take a guided walk up to Hill Inlet, have a swim in the crystal-clear waters or watch the marine life pass by.

Day 6: Airlie Beach

Today, you’ll be able to explore Airlie Beach at your leisure and although your first instinct might be to head out to the reef, we recommend you travel slightly inland for a tour of a different kind.

Whitsunday Crocodile Safaris have been introducing visitors to the local crocs along the Proserpine River for 18 years!

They estimate that there are around 150 crocodiles that inhabit this area. It’s a great way to see them in the wild while enjoying the commentary from your experienced guide.

Day 7: Proserpine to Brisbane

Spend the morning at your leisure before being transferred by the RailBus Coach Connection to Proserpine. Re-join the Spirit of Queensland and cozy up in your Rail Bed as you travel overnight to Brisbane.

Day 8: Brisbane

Arrive in Brisbane in the morning where your adventure concludes.
