Sailing Magic on Magnetic Island

There’s a beautiful island that so baffled Captain Cook – sending his compass haywire – he was convinced it had magnetic properties.

Little did Cook know he’d chosen the perfect name for one of the most alluring and magical escapes in tropical Queensland – Magnetic Island.

“Maggie” – as she’s affectionately known – is a 40-minute voyage by passenger or car ferry from Townsville. Hop on board with Magnetic Island Ferries and they’ll have you in paradise before you know it.

At Nelly Bay Marina, Peppers Blue on Blue is waiting to receive you – a stylish resort of suites and apartments that overlooks tall masts and tranquil waters.

The resort’s Boardwalk Bar & Restaurant is a special place to take in the island vibe – and perhaps imbibe an exotic cocktail or two.

But don’t go overboard – because you’ll want your senses sharp for one of the most magical experiences possible on Magnetic Island: sailing onboard a 58-metre luxury yacht called Pilgrim.

Clare and Paul Ley are the owners of Pilgrim Sailing and they offer tours and private charters around the island.

Choose from a lazy lunchtime sail or stunning sunset cruise. You can even help hoist the mainsail if you’re keen.

Paul and Clare also offer a boutique experience called “Beach Club”.

Travel by tender to your own private beach where a gourmet picnic will be set up, just for you and your loved one.

Beach cricket gear and boules are supplied – should you want to make the most of your secluded stretch of sand at one of Maggie’s 32 beautiful bay beaches.

Currently, Beach Club is available to couples – but, down the track, it will cater for up to 4 people.

Like Captain Cook, you’ll be bewitched by beautiful Magnetic Island – truly one of the jewels of the tropical north.
