Wonder Reef Gold Coast: The First Buoyant Reef

Wonder Reef Gold Coast is the first buoyant reef in the world. This innovative new attraction was designed to help preserve the environment and create a new tourist destination for the area. Made of concrete and plastic, it is designed to be environmentally friendly and has attracted fish and other marine life.

Purposely designed to attract and sustain a rich variety of marine life and offer an iconic and exciting dive experience for divers of all levels, Wonder Reef has two dive companies servicing divers – we recently went out with Gold Coast Dive Adventures.

Just 2.5 kilometres offshore from The Spit, Wonder Reef is a fusion of art, science and engineering and comprises of nine giant buoyant sculptural reefs that soar almost 22 metres above the sea floor. You can Immerse yourself in wonder – swim through the giant sculptures, or see the structures from the bottom at 30 metres below the surface.

Only installed late last year, the site is now to a host of marine life from lobsters, beautiful tropical fish, turtles, octopus and giant gropers – getting up close and personal with the newest inhabitants is something else.
