Buckle up your seat belts! We’re off on a self-drive tour of the ‘Dig the Tropic Geo-Tourism Trail’. Starting in Yeppoon on Queensland’s Capricorn Coast, we hit the road for an adventure full of geological wonders.
We’re headed west towards Yaamba to visit the Capricorn Caves at Mount Etna Caves National Park. The swinging bridge entrance beckons you into the caves to begin what feels like a journey to the centre of the earth.
If you’re really adventurous, you might like to take the ‘Bats and Bones, Poo and Spew’ tour, which gives you the opportunity to fossick through ancient debris left by critters of the night to find fossils and other surprises.
Jump back in the car and take the road less travelled all the way out to the Blackdown Tableland National Park. The sandstone escarpments will lead you on a trail of adventure all the way up the mountain, where the air is thinner and the landscape drastically changes. The widespread views of the region will take your breath away, and you’ll feel like you’re in a different world.
The last stop on our road trip could be your chance to strike it rich! The Central Queensland Gemfields is home to little towns scattered throughout the region. If green is your colour, visit Rubyvale; discovered as Australia’s largest emerald deposit. Be prepared when ‘emerald fever’ strikes, there are still plenty to find!
