World of Wonder: Margot McKinney

Museum of Brisbane at Brisbane’s City Hall is now hosting a sparkling exhibition, World of Wonder: Margot McKinney.

World of Wonder is the fourth in the museum’s identity series featuring Brisbane’s cultural greats. Past exhibitions included famed ballet dancer Li Cunxin and fashion designers, Easton Pearson.

On show is a treasure trove of prestigious jewellery, designed by fourth-generation and Brisbane-based jeweler, Margot McKinney.

It’s a celebration of the world’s most beautiful and precious gems, in pieces designed by a woman whose works have adorned Hollywood stars and graced red carpets across the globe.

Margot is famous for the use of pearls and opals in her priceless, one-of-a-kind pieces.

“When the Museum of Brisbane contacted us about two years ago and we started to talk about this, I just couldn’t believe it.” Said Margot.

“And now here we are standing in the midst of World of Wonder.”

The exhibition is an opportunity for visitors to learn about Margot’s craft.

“There is a story behind each piece of jewellery.  And knowing where the gemstones come from and who’s cut the gemstones, and the whole story and process that has gone on behind the scenes, I think is a really lovely thing to know.”

The exhibition has four areas of focus with family history being one. The other three are world of pearls, world of opals and world of colour.

World of Wonder: Margot McKinney is on at the Museum of Brisbane at Brisbane City Hall until the sixth of November.
