Come From Away at QPAC

September 11, 2001 was a time when the worst of humanity was on show in the action of terrorists.

As New Yorkers reeled back from the news that planes had hit the twin towers,  there was another airline drama unfolding, a few thousand kilometres away.

However, it’s an uplifting story that’s the subject of the musical Come from Away.

It’s set a remote island in Newfoundland, Canada after planeloads of international passengers were forced to divert, land, and wait out the terrorist threat.

This Broadway smash hit steps (and sings) us through the hours and days after the attacks as the little town of Gander swings into action to care for 7000 nervous and unexpected visitors.

Award-winning husband and wife duo David Hein and Irene Sankoff travelled to Newfoundland and interviewed thousands of locals, compiling their stories to share with the world on the stage.

Come From Away has been described by critics as “irresistible and inspiring” and a “beautifully crafted hymn to the power of community”.

It’s set to some rollicking Newfoundland tunes, that help illustrates the culture and history of the people of Gander.

Come From Away is playing now at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, and the season continues until the 2nd May. Don’t miss your chance to share an important history lesson that’s beautifully told.
