The upper reaches of the Noosa River is a wilderness wonderland. It’s home to just one of two Everglade systems that exist on planet earth… which makes it a pretty special place in our pocket of Queensland and a big hit with keen kayakers!
Someone who knows it well is former Australian kayaking champ, Vivienne Golding… some even call her ‘Queen of the Kayak’! She runs her business, Kanu Kapers, from the banks of Lake Cootharaba with adventurer partner, Kym.
But that hasn’t always been the case. It was a trip more than 20 years ago that kept them coming back. And why wouldn’t they?
“You seek paddling adventures when you’re a kayaker… and I came up to the Noosa Everglades for a three-day trip and I was just blown away by the offering here… it was just so amazing,” Vivienne said.
If you too are seeking a paddling adventure, Vivienne offers one-day tours – and you can choose between guided, which are fully catered for, or you can opt for self-guided. Either way, they’re both very well-supported and are a great way to check out this spectacular ecosystem.
But if you’re after something a little more adventurous, Vivienne also offers multi-day tours where all the camping gear, permits and more are looked after for you.
Either way, a full immersion into the area’s abundant flora and fauna is a guarantee. And that’s because it’s home to 44% of the Australian birdlife! With plenty to marvel at, it really makes you appreciate the experiences we have right on our doorstep in Queensland. So, it’s important for us to look after them so future generations can enjoy their full extent like we have!
Doing just that is Phillip Moran from Noosa & District Landcare. He and his team, plus a large group of volunteers, work around the clock to help achieve long-term environmental outcomes for the Noosa region. That includes the production of more than 200,000 plants each year!
“We’re a non-for-profit community group that specialises in environmental matters… but it’s my job to try and make us a not-for-loss,” Phillip said.
“So, if you’re up in Pomona, which is the center of the universe, drop into the Hinterhub, buy a plant, and help save the world.”
