Sobah was Australia’s first non-alcoholic craft beer and they’ve just opened the country’s first non-alcoholic craft brewery!
Sobah offers a refreshing alternative for those looking to enjoy the social aspects of drinking without the negative health impacts. Their beers are brewed to maintain the complexity and depth of traditional craft beers, minus the alcohol.
“It’s 100% a beer made with all the same base ingredients that any other regular beer would be,” says Clinton Schultz. “We just brew with particular strains of yeast that don’t lead to the formation of alcohol.”
Founded by Clinton Schultz, a proud Gamilaroi man, and his wife Lozen Schultz, Sobah isn’t just about beer; it’s a celebration of Aboriginal culture. Based on beautiful Kombumerri country in Burleigh Heads, Sobah’s beers are infused with native Australian ingredients like finger lime, lemon aspen, and pepperberry.
Clinton, a psychologist, was inspired to start Sobah after his own personal journey. “I stopped drinking about ten and a half years ago when my boy, who’s about to turn 16, came to me one morning and just said, ‘Dad, can you stop drinking silly drink?’ I quickly figured out that I really love beer. I just didn’t want to feel like I had to miss out on a flavor that I enjoyed, just because I was choosing not to have alcohol.”
Sobah’s Brewery & Cafe is a welcoming space that includes an art gallery, gift shop, and café with a bush-tucker-inspired menu. Visitors can enjoy tours and tastings, connecting with the rich cultural and natural heritage of the area. “Connection is everything for us as mob. We’re fortunate to live, work, and play here on beautiful Kombumerri country,” Clinton says.
Beyond creating delicious beverages, Sobah Brewing is committed to social change. They actively support initiatives that promote mental health, cultural awareness, and environmental sustainability.
They support various community initiatives, including Containers for Change. Clinton shares, “At the end of the day, our mission is to do less harm and do more good.”
