The heritage railway station at Longreach, Outback Queensland, has seen all manner of rollingstock over its one hundred and thirty years.
Now, there’s a flash new customer in town – a silver 2000 series rail motor from the 1970s, revived and enlisted for rail adventures with Outback Aussie Tours.
Choose from 3 different Outback Rail Adventures.
The Darr River Run is a morning experience that takes you across the mighty Thompson River to the mulga country beyond. The tour includes an off-train guided wander through the mulga, learning about the medicinal qualities of the bushes and plants that grow there. Then it’s back on board for a final push through to Darr River waterhole – where the billies are boiling and smoko is ready.
Feel like something more substantial? Hop on the train for its run to the historical town of Ilfracombe. The tour includes lunch at the famous Wellshot Hotel where the tradition of throwing money onto the roof raises funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
At end of day, there’s the Silver Tails Sunset Rail tour. Climb aboard for a gentle rock-n-roll out onto the golden plains and – as the sun swoons – be treated to sparkling wine and complimentary canapes. The train stops at a peaceful lagoon so you can take in the colours of an Outback dusk across the water.
Where to stay while you’re in Longreach? Mitchell Grass Retreat offers luxury under canvas just outside of town – the perfect base for your Outback adventures.
Think 5-star glamping meets down-to-earth country hospitality – with continental breakfast delivered to your tent and the option to upgrade to BBQ dinner packs and nibbles platters to salute the sunset.
The Gidyea tents are perfect for couples while the Mulga tents have heaps of room for the whole family. The kids might even like to bunk down, drover-style, under the stars in the complimentary swags.
