Hervey Bay is the only stop on the humpback highway where whales heading north for winter rest, play and stay for up to a week. So, it’s only fitting that the city not only commemorates, but celebrates these majestic mammals.
The Hervey Bay Whale Festival is held at the start of the whale watching season each year. There is a raft of events like the Blessing of the Fleet and the music filled Twilight Swing to kick off the celebrations.
At the City and Sea event, rides, food stalls and live acts line the seafront, while at City Park, the Discovery Pod offers the chance to learn more about our marine mysteries and how to protect our oceans.
The Downer Parade of Lights showcases inspiring, illuminated marine lanterns held by their creators as they walk towards the sea. And you can make your own lantern and join in! A paddle out honoring the creatures that mean so much to the Fraser Coast community is a moving tribute.
Hundreds take to the sea in kayaks and boards, forming a circle for a minute’s silence. Head to the Hervey Bay Whale Festival webpage to learn more and how you can participate next year. And Visit Fraser Coast has all the information you need to plan your whale watching adventure this winter.
