Queensland’s railway history is tied up in more than just trains and tracks.
The state has an impressive collection of heritage railway stations… many still standing as the gateways to their regions.
You’ll discover some gems on Queensland Rail travel adventures – including beautiful fern-festooned Kuranda Station, end of the line for the amazing Kuranda Scenic Railway journey. The station also features a century-old signal cabin – still in operation.
In the remote Gulf Savannah, the classic curved shape of Normanton Station is home to the famous Gulflander, which rattles its way between Normanton and the old gold mining town of Croydon. The station is also a museum in its own right – filled with rail memorabilia.
When it comes to historically important stations, the pick of the crop is way out west.
The Spirit of the Outback carves its way through iconic bush towns – with whistle-stops at beautiful Emerald Station and the terminus at Barcaldine. Step off the train in “Barcy” and you come face to face with the Tree of Knowledge – a memorial to striking shearers who gathered outside the railway station in the late 1800s.
Further along the line, lovely Longreach Station is the gracious gateway to the Queensland Outback’s unofficial capital.
Discover Queensland by Rail with seven train journeys that span Queensland – from along the coast, to the tropics and way out west.
