Vivid Sydney 2019

In its eleventh year, Vivid Sydney is preparing to light up the city with startling projections and sculptures, a huge range of contemporary music events and provocative ideas. The festival will run for 23 days from May 24 to June 15, with outdoor lighting installations in the Rocks, Circular Quay, Royal Botanic Gardens, Martin Place, Darling Harbour, Barangaroo South, Chatswood and Taronga Zoo.

One major highlight of the 2019 festival is at the Argyle Cut in the Rocks, where Pixar will screen a site-specific installation charting the history and technology of 30 years of 3D animation.

Mel is meeting up with Vivid Sydney Light Curator Lucy Keeler to find out what’s going to be on offer during this year’s festival. We’re also going to meet some of the local Sydney artists who are making works for the festival.

Our first stop is the 107 Projects space in Redfern, where artists from all sorts of backgrounds can come together and explore their creativity. The building offers workrooms, exhibition spaces and meeting areas, and will be holding an immersive event in its rooftop garden on June 8 as part of the Vivid Sydney program.

We also visit Mandylights, a Sydney company that was born in the very early days of Vivid Sydney and has gone on to create artworks in more than 60 countries across the globe.
