Have you ever been to Gumpi? You may know it better as Dunwich, on beautiful Minjerribah or North Stradbroke Island.
This little community on the island’s western coast is also the setting for an extraordinary celebration of country, culture and people called Quandamooka Festival.
Over 3 big days, the First Nations people of Moreton Bay welcome to share their rich heritage and culture… through song, dance, craft and food. And everyone is welcome.
Live music is a big part of the festival – with Quandamooka performers returning home from across south-east Queensland to play and sing, on country.
Learn traditional weaving skills with Aunty Sonia – and try a modern spin on the Kupmurri cooking method.
For kids, there’s face painting and other fun activities. And the markets are a great place to explore the creative talents of Quandamooka artists like Casey Coolwell. The festival is a must-do and it’s on again in 2023.
And if that puts you in the partying mood, why not head online to the It’s Live in Queensland website – for a full calendar of amazing festivals and events across the state.
Whether you come to Minjerribah for Quandamooka Festival, or for a holiday, there are plenty of ways to dive deeper into Quandamooka culture.
Try a walk and art workshop with resident artist, Delvene Cockatoo-Collins or head out on a kayak with Shakas Adventure Tours, in the company of an indigenous cultural guide.
By the way, getting to Minjerribah from the mainland is easy. Sealink run regular vehicle and passenger ferry services throughout the day. It’s a pleasant and gentle 45-minute voyage across Moreton Bay.
