Backpacking around Queensland

If you’re a ‘boots and backpack’ kind of traveller, Queensland Rail Travel can make the Sunshine State’s east coast your personal playground.

The Spirit of Queensland travels between Brisbane and Cairns five times a week.  Book a Stop-Over Fare and you get unlimited stops in a single direction of travel when you travel Economy and Premium Economy.

Need help planning your itinerary?

Let’s start in Cairns – where the tour options are plentiful. Head over to Green Island to snorkel beautiful coral reefs, then towel off and jump on board the Kuranda Scenic Railway for a journey that takes in rainforest, thundering waterfalls and a cute mountain village.

Grab a bargain; a bite to eat; or a massage at the famous Cairns Night Markets. While you’re there – if you’re game – pay a visit to the Fish Spa. Hundreds of tiny finned ‘therapists’ nibble away the rough skin on your feet in the craziest pedicure you’ll ever experience.

Plant those super-smooth soles back on board the Spirit of Queensland and she’ll deliver you to Townsville, just down the coast.  The Strand is the spot for a cocktail or coffee overlooking the ocean. Or you can hit the high seas and head over to magnificent Magnetic Island. The island has 23 bays and beaches to explore: the best way is by Mini-Moke. Drop into Bungalow Bay Koala Village for a wildlife encounter that’s – well – simply wild!

Jump back on board the Spirit of Queensland and, before you know it, you’ll be in Proserpine – just 30 minutes from Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands.

Airlie is all about action. Hook up with a jet-ski tour through the islands; cruise the coast in a classic convertible; or come face to face with a saltwater monster on a day out with Whitsunday Crocodile Safari.

Your travel experience on board the Spirit of Queensland in Premium Economy is relaxing and comfortable – with reclining seats; panoramic windows; and personal entertainment screens. The Club Car serves up hot meals, snacks and cold drinks.

Queensland Rail’s Stop Over Fare is a good value way to explore some of the state’s premium tourist destinations.
