Since 1876, the Royal Queensland Show has played host to the best produce our state has to offer, showcased in the heart of Brisbane. It’s no surprise that a teeny-tiny bump in the paddock like a “pandemic” has only strengthened the show’s country spirit, coming back bigger and better than ever for its second year now, and foodies will not be disappointed.
When the chips are down (literally, on your plate), you can bet this year’s country spirit will wrangle in some of the most mouth-watering, innovative food options the Ekka has ever seen, with some surprising new takes on the old classics, guaranteed to suit every taste and budget.
The Royal Queensland Steakhouse and Bar
If you’re staking out where to find the best Wagyu in Australia, look no further!
More of a rare attraction for the Ekka, Brisbane Showgrounds Executive Chef Dean Brewer and his team will be dishing up more than 6000 award-winning steaks come showtime, so the Royal Queensland Steakhouse and Bar Presented by Kilcoy Global Foods is not to be missed.
If your jam is more for fine dining, the ICON XB Wagyu by Paradigm Foods from Darling Downs is officially Australia’s best steak, having been named Grand Champion Branded Beef of Show at Ekka’s Royal Queensland Awards. This is just one of Australia’s best steaks on the menu at the Steakhouse, complemented by a range of other award-winning produce.
The Smokehouse
Not to be confused with the Steakhouse, the Smokehouse is located on Gregory Terrace, but you won’t have any trouble finding it… you’ll be able to smell the soul of the south well down the street. Premiering this year, the Smokehouse is a new “grab-and-go”, casual dining offer, featuring delicious smoked briskets, southern-inspired burgers, golden fried chicken, and more…
Our recommendation? The Ebony Black Angus Smoked Brisket Burger:
This 12-hour smoked brisket plate includes:
- Award-winning, grain-fed beef
- Coleslaw
- BBQ sauce, and
- Pickles.
All served on a milk bun with fries.
The Ultimate Strawberry Sundae
A new take on an old classic, this year there will be a luxe version of the iconic Strawberry Sundae, also available at the Steakhouse. This Ekka-first dessert, served in the shape of an actual strawberry, is made with:
- Strawberry mousse
- Marshmallow
- Strawberry compote, and
- Strawberry velvet.
But what about the Ekka classics?
Don’t worry! Unlike the award-winning meats available all over the showgrounds, none of our nostalgic favourites will be getting “the chop”.
From popular “show food” like dagwood dogs, golden cheese toasties and potatoes on a stick, to the charming Country Women’s Association scones and iconic Strawberry Sundaes, there is something for every taste, age and budget.
You can go with the kids or plan yourself a well-deserved, sneaky date night! Whatever award-winning culinary delights you choose across the showgrounds throughout the day or night, you can guarantee you and your loved ones can most certainly feast on a job…“well done”.
Gates swing open at the Brisbane Showgrounds from 12 – 20 August. It’s a foodie’s paradise no matter your budget. Get a head start on planning your day out at www.ekka.com.au.
