Queensland Rail Gulflander

The Gulflander, also affectionately known as the Tin Hare, travels between Normanton and Croydon in far north Queensland. It’s one of the last great characters of the rail world and the journey on board takes about five hours as it travels through grassy savannah country. The Gulflander started operating in 1891 and it still runs on the original rail and sleepers.

The Gulflander departs on a Wednesday from Normanton and returns from Croydon the following morning. A return ticket for adults costs $115. A great option is one of Queensland Rail Travel’s Gulf Savannah packages. They include the Gulflander, plus stays at the incredible Cobbold Gorge, a night at the amazing Undara Lava Tubes, and a two-day journey on the Savannahlander, the 1960s classic train also known as the Silver Bullet!
