Mt Isa is the main centre in North West Queensland and boasts museums, art galleries, cafés and best of all, the ‘Hard Times Mine,’ which takes visitors underground to experience what it is like to be a working miner.
Get the full Isa experience at the Hard Times Mine, where the town boasts the largest underground mine in the country.
Head underground into the mine which exhibits the city’s mining history, from the discovery of lead ore in 1923, to the present day.
Once upon a time, a mining cage only carried four men down at a time, now these large, robust mines can carry at least ninety-two men per deck down the shaft to work. There’s two decks, so at the start of the day, 184 men can go down. There are 1.2km of tunnels to explore underground so there’s no doubt that this is the real deal!
Join the tour guides to test the mining machinery and enjoy a nerve-wracking mine blast simulation over a cuppa in the tiny but true size mess hall.
