Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend

Step Boldly into the Wunderous world of Nevermoor where things aren’t always as they seem but they are always fun.

Morrigan Crowe is a cursed child, destined to die on her twelfth birthday or as it is known Eventide. But when Eventide comes early it takes a year from her short life…. or so it should have. Enter Jupiter North– a sassy and clever character from another land. A magical land where Morrigan will be safe from the effects of Eventide. The only thing is, Morrigan will have to prove that she can become a member of The Wunderous Society in order to be able to stay in Nevermoor.

This book can be described with just one word. Fun. It doesn’t take long to get into the action and once you hit Nevermoor the wonders never cease. Most of the book takes place in the Hotel Deucalion– a hotel that is always changing as it never likes to wear the same outfit twice. Meet Fenstra the Magnificat (not to be read as Magnificent, though she most certainly is), and Hawthorne– a bit of a troublemaker who goes on to become Morrigan’s best friend.

This book is so well written that adults and children alike will love it. The world of Nevermoor is gorgeous and Morrigan is already one of the best female adventure characters that I have read in a book and I’m really looking forward to seeing how she grows in the next ones. The way she is written it is hard to believe she is only an eleven-year-old child but at the same time it never feels like an important detail once the action starts.

I highly recommend this book to any fan of fantasy. Whilst it is a middle grade book and written for children aged 8 to 12 I really think it’s something that anyone will love.
