It’s just shy of 100 years since the very last Cobb & Co coach ran in Australia.
But you can still hear the thundering hooves, taste the dust and feel that heart-in-the-mouth rush of yesteryear.
Outback Pioneers in Longreach, Central Queensland, offer a once-in-a-lifetime ride on board a Cobb & Co coach led by a fully-hitched team of horses.
Just get yourself to The Staging Post at the old Welcome Home Hotel, Outback Pioneers heritage headquarters in the heart of town.
The ride takes you out onto the old Longreach-Windorah Cobb & Co mail run track – and includes a thrilling gallop through the scrub.
The experience also includes an old-time picture show in the theatrette plus the fun and shenanigans of an Old Time Tent Show. You also sit down to an authentic Cobb & Co coach-style morning tea of scones, cream and jam.
Want the full dose of nostalgia?
Why not book a stall – make that a room – at The Stables, just a stone’s throw from the Welcome Home. The heritage-themed quarters echo the digs enjoyed by coach travellers of the 1800s – with plenty of 21st century comforts thrown in.
