Get ready for some BIG fun in this month’s line up of festivals and events.
First, we’re bound for the wide-open plains of the Western Downs for the annual Big Skies Festival held on the grounds and property of heritage-listed Jimbour House. The festival runs from 3 to 7 September – with top country and rock acts taking to the stage on Saturday and Sunday nights of the King’s Birthday long weekend. Add in country markets, foodie experiences and regional tours (including a peek inside grand Jimbour House) and there’s something for everyone. The WEEKENDER team will be at this year’s festival, capturing all the colour – so keep an eye out for us! Let’s keep the country vibes going with the Australian Camp Oven Festival in Milmerran – another cast-iron favourite with young and old. The event runs across two big days – 5 and 6 October – with damper throws, camp oven cook-offs and heritage displays. It’s a beautiful baked-in celebration of bush culture. Heading to the tropics – the North Australian Festival of Arts unfurls in Townsville from 26 September to 13 October. It’s 18 days packed with comedy, dance, theatre, circus, music, cabaret, workshops and more. A smidge further north and we’re in Cairns for Shine on Gimuy. This dynamic celebration of First Nations art, culture and storytelling brings the Cairns foreshore to life with dance, stage performances and light and sound installations from 3 to 13 October.
