Rocky Heritage

Rockhampton, on the Capricorn Coast, was a major Queensland sea-port during the 19th century gold rush. Much of the grand architecture erected in that era remains along the Fitzroy riverfront. Quay Street alone boasts nearly twenty heritage buildings.

Immerse yourself in more local history at Rockhampton Heritage Village. The village is set on 11 hectares and houses a huge memorabilia collection that covers a century of the region’s past: from 1850 to 1950. It’s open every day and adult entry costs $14.50.

History buffs should also make tracks to Rockhampton’s Archer Park Rail Museum. The heritage-listed station dates back more than a century. Its pride and joy is a fully restored and operational Purrey Steam Train. Visitors can hop aboard for a ride every Sunday.

For those wanting to continue the heritage theme on their holiday, the Regent Hotel Rockhampton is a good option. Built in 1898, the grand hotel offers accommodation rated at 4 and a half stars.
