St Helens Beach Fishing

Chris heads to St Helens Beach to meet the Bennett family who are passionate about fishing.

Chris learns about the new commercial net free fishing zones. They are zones where there’s no commercial gill netting. They were created to boost fish stocks, increase tourism and improve the health of waterways.

There are three zones. One in the Mackay region that stretches from Cape Hillsborough to St Helens Beach and it takes up about 150 square kilometres.

There’s also another zone further south around Rockhampton that takes in the Fitzroy River and Keppel Bay. The third and final zone is at Cairns and goes up to Trinity Inlet.
