Time Out in Woombye & Coolum

Here’s an antidote for the busy city blues.

Head to the Sunshine Coast and spend some time in the embrace of nature at Sixty6 Acres Farmstay in Woombye – one of the coast’s new luxury country retreats.

Hosts, Jo and Andrew Pitcher are 4th generation Woombye locals. They transformed a neglected cane farm into a dream escape, inspired by their own family holidays at farmstays around the world.

Sixty6 Acres Farm stay is steeped in country charm, yet just 15 minutes from the beach.  And – as the name suggests – there’s a spacious 66 acres for guests to roam.

Take a dip or kayak on the spring-fed lake. Enjoy a stroll with the family to feed the friendly farm animals. Play around on the mini golf course. Or simply settle back in one of six exquisitely appointed 2-bedroom farm quarters.

Luxury lakefront cabins feature expansive decks, wood burning fireplaces, full kitchens and – our favourite touch – a free standing bath, perfect for soaking-in a country sunrise or sunset.

The Pitcher family are justifiably proud of creating something special for their beloved home-town of Woombye.

Deep pride and a long connection to place – both have been celebrated for millennia by the Kabi Kabi people of the region.

In Coolum, you can join members of the local community at a cultural ceremony called the Dawn Awakening – part of the Sunshine Coast’s Horizon Festival happening from August 25 to September 3.

The multi-arts performance at Sunrise will take place at Stumers Creek – and is expected to be a profoundly moving highlight of the festival.

Lyndon Davis is the Artistic Director of Dawn Awakening, working with First Nations artists to give life to their stories through song, art and dance.

“Events like this give us an opportunity to pass on that local knowledge,” says Lyndon.  “And to connect everybody to the places that we found very important.”

Horizon Festival will bring 10 days and nights of music, art, performance, creative workshops and family fun to the Sunshine Coast.

But long after the sun sets on this year’s festival, you’ll find endless “Sunshine Moments” in friendly Coolum… whether it’s riding the waves, tasting your way around town, hiking up Mt Coolum, or enjoying a drop of liquid sunshine at Blackflag Brewing’s new compound.

Founded by a bunch of mates, Blackflag is passion and creativity in a can – and colourful cans at that!

With imaginative artwork outside and intriguing flavours inside, the brewery’s signature beers are inspired by the Sunshine Coast.  After all, the coast is Australia’s Craft Beer Capital, with more breweries per capita than any state or territory.

They have a name for that feeling of joy when you’ve found your happy place – it’s called a “Sunshine Moment”.

So, choose your own adventure on the Sunshine Coast…
