Scenic Rim rustic charms: The Overflow Estate

There’s something alluring about hitting the road to the country during Queensland winter – beautiful scenery, long and winding roads, and gems that only Queensland country can offer up.

The Overflow Estate, halfway between Boonah and Beaudesert, is one fine example. It’s a stunning winery that exceeds all expectations. A small establishment, perched upon the banks of the Wyaralong Dam – the perfect place for a vineyard, or an afternoon spent sampling its finest wares.

“We’ve got four superb different grapes here,” marketing manager Emily Lochran told us. “The Italian Vermentino has won a national award, which (for a young vineyard) is excellent. We have great things in the pipeline.”

A weekend country drive deserves an overnight stay and just 20 minutes down the road is the latest in luxe, this side of the great divide.

Oozing elegance with its marble floors, fur throws and chic chandeliers, Herrman House is boutique accommodation in the heart of Kalbar.

Originally the first house in the town, the owners wanted to save this piece of town-history.

“The Herman family came along to us, had mentioned this other very historic house that they had, and they wanted it saved, in Kalbar, so we moved it down and turned it into one beautiful homestead.”
