Trinity Inlet: Net Free Fishing

While throngs of tourists depart Cairns’ Marlin Marina on a daily mass exodus to the Great Barrier Reef, there’s another picturesque boating destination well worth investigating. Trinity Inlet is a delta of creeks, mangroves and islets that lies about half hour inland from Cairns. Cairns Boat Hire can set you up with a pontoon BBQ boat for a spot of fishing in the inlet – which is part of the Trinity Bay Net Free Fishing zone, a big swathe of water surrounding Cairns where commercial netting is a no-go.

The zone’s northern edge lies abeam of pretty Trinity Beach. A fraction further north, you’ll discover Ellis Beach – another stretch of sand that’s a hit with holidaymakers. Ellis Beach Oceanfront Bungalows offer a front-row seat to this slice of paradise. There’s a range of cabins from which to choose, many of them overlooking the beach. The retreat is also a favourite with campers and caravanners.
Head over the road to Ellis Beach Bar & Grill for great atmosphere and food, in an open-air setting overlooking the beach.
