Where can you find one of only two everglades systems on the planet and a wilderness with more bird species than the Northern Territory’s Kakadu?
Surprisingly, it’s just two hours north of Brisbane and on the doorstep of one of the Sunshine Coast’s premier holiday spots.
It’s the Noosa Everglades – part of 75,000 hectares of national park, just 30 minutes from the beach resort town of Noosa Heads.
A great way to explore the everglades is on board an eco-cruise departing Elanda Point, on the edge of Lake Cootharaba.
After crossing the broad, shallow waters of the lake, the purpose-built eco-boat threads its way into the narrow waterways of the everglades.
It’s a near-silent kingdom of no tides – where tea-tree tannins turn the water to ink. On a still day, the reflections are remarkable.
Bird, reptile and fish life are plentiful in this pristine place. It’s the world’s only other everglade eco-system apart from the famous wetlands of Florida.
You can opt to kayak part of the journey – but whether a paddler or passenger, all end up at Harry’s Hut Campground.
It’s named for a tumble-down logger’s cottage that was the secret fishing shack of Cooroy chemist, Harry Springs, in the 1950s.
After morning tea and a dip in the mirror-like waters, it’s all aboard for the return journey to Habitat Noosa.
Habitat Noosa sprawls across 65 hectares of bushland overlooking Lake Cootharaba.
It’s a fantastic place to stay and play in this amazing wilderness – with powered and unpowered sites right by the water; cute cabins; and wilderness tents that are perfect for families.
For couples and romantics, the Paperbark Glamping Tents offer more intimate and stylish accommodation.
There’s a kiosk on site –or you can dine in style at CootharaBAR. With its exposed timbers and micro-brewery, Habitat Noosa’s bar and restaurant would look right at home in a trendy city laneway. But don’t you love that it’s smack bang in the heart of wilderness instead?
