The Western Downs is brimming with country charm and vibrance. Dalby, just under 3 hours from Brisbane, is the gateway to this incredible part of Queensland.
Once a year, the whole town, plus those from further afar, turn out for the Dalby Picnic Races. What originally started out as an amateur race event, is now up to its 106th race meeting.
It’s a day of fashion, racing, and good old country hospitality. The Dalby Picnic Races this year kicked off the Western Downs, Big Skies Festival. It’s an event that celebrated everything the region has to offer, including the fascinating history behind some of the area’s oldest homesteads, live music, hot air balloon rides, and even agricultural tours.
Of all things ag around Dalby, cotton must be one of, if not the most widespread crop on the Western
Downs. Time your trip right and you will find yourself driving through acres and acres of lush, soft white cotton crops.
It’s a sight to behold, and always worth a photo!
