The Great Whitehaven Beach Run

Arguably the most beautiful stretch of sand in the world, spectacular Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays is usually reserved for lazing in the sun and taking the occasional dip in an azure sea. From across the planet, people come here to swim and stroll along its sandy perfection.

But for one day each winter, strolling takes a back-seat to full-on, leg-pumping action as Hamilton Island hosts the annual Great Whitehaven Beach Run.

It’s a fitness challenge that takes place in a stunning, world-class setting – and the whole family can get involved.

Contenders come from Hamilton Island, the mainland and even over the border to tackle the 11 kilometre event. It feels a little like running in the desert – sand everywhere, sun blazing – with the temptation of that cool, blue ocean just metres away.  Regular hydration stations along the beach route help ease the pain.

Techniques for tackling the Great Whitehaven Beach Run vary – including the option to stride barefoot over the sand. And to help improve your odds of being a front-runner, Hamilton Island holds running clinics and workshops in the lead-up to the race.

There are shorter events for those with less stamina, and height! Even the littlest athletes get the chance to show off their marathon talent in the children’s run.
