The culture of Indigenous Australians is one of the oldest in the world. Throughout our country, there are many once in a lifetime encounters to learn about this ancient culture.
Tropical North Queensland has a rich indigenous heritage just waiting to be discovered and shared. Our journey found us at some of these incredible places.
Experiences in Mossman and Port Douglas:
Mossman Gorge – Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk
Mossman Gorge can be found in the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest, one of the oldest rainforests in the world. The traditional owners of this land are the Kuku Yalangi people, who have a deep-seated connection to their country.
During a Dreamtime walk, you’ll follow in the footsteps of a traditional guide who will share the history and stories that lie within this special place.
The Mossman Gorge Centre is the gateway to the gorge. Staff will assist you in planning your route around the Gorge, as well as book your Dreamtime Walk.
STAY – Silky Oaks Lodge, Mossman
These breathtaking eco lodges are in the heart of Kuku Yalangi country, sitting right on the Mossman River. These luxurious tree houses allow you to truly experience and appreciate the beauty of the rainforest. Janbal Aboriginal Art Gallery, Mossman
At Janbal Gallery, visitors can learn first-hand about Aboriginal art and culture. The gallery’s owner, Brian ‘Binna’ Swindley runs regular art workshops where he shares his culture and stories with others.
Binna is an inspiring artist with an equally inspiring story to tell. He was born with a severe hearing impairment which he overcame by learning to lip read and speak extremely well. His infectious smile and entertaining stories make this experience a must when you’re in Mossman.
STAY – Coconut Grove Apartments, Port Douglas
Whilst traveling around Port Douglas, the Coconut Grove apartments are a great place to base yourself. The apartments are situated on Macrossan Street, Trendy cafes, restaurants and boutique shops line the streets and they’re all within walking distance of your front door! And if that’s not enough to tickle your fancy, the penthouses feature your very own swimming pool and spa! What a treat!
Flames of the Forest is Australia’s only rainforest dining experience, enriched with Indigenous flavor. As day turns to night, the rainforest transforms into an enchanting scene, bringing new meaning to a candlelit dinner.
Local produce is served throughout the evening but it’s not the only feast for the senses. Diners will be taken on a journey of storytelling and music, performed by traditional owners. It’s a once in a lifetime experience that’s sure to leave you floating home on a spiritual high.
Experiences in Cairns and Kuranda:
Tjapukai Cultural Park, Cairns
The Tjapukai people are the original inhabitants of the mountains and gorges of the Cairns area. The saying ‘look don’t touch’ certainly does not apply at the Tjapukai Cultural Park. Visitors can join in on a number of hands on experiences. Try your hand at ancient hunting techniques like spear or boomerang throwing, or be entertained by a variety of live performances.

Rainforestation Nature Park, Kuranda
If you’d like a taste of indigenous culture, then a bush tucka walk is the way to go! Visitors can learn about ancient hunting and gathering techniques on a guided bush tucka walk at the Rainforestation Nature Park.
The centre is also home to the Pamagirri Dance Group, who entertain visitors with their captivating, and humorous performances! Make sure you stick around until the end because there’s a surprise waiting for the audience.
STAY – The Grand Barron Lodge, Kuranda
If you’re planning on staying in Kuranda overnight, then you can’t go past The Grand Barron Lodge. This is truly a hidden gem, set amongst the rainforest, overlooking the Mossman River.
The home has been lovingly restored, whilst still honouring many of its original features. There are 3 beautiful rooms to choose from, and communal living areas where guests can gather around the fire place.

Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, Cairns
The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and art.
One of the main focuses of the festival is to support local artists and to provide a platform for them to share their art with Queensland and the world.
There is an abundance of indigenous creativity in Tropical North Queensland, and it all comes together here at CIAF. Take part in workshops, buy a unique piece of artwork, enjoy performances and celebrate this incredible culture!
