There are a few telltale signs that you’re on an island holiday: ocean views, drinks by the pool and losing track of time. If that sounds like your idea of holiday heaven, then let us introduce you to Fitzroy Island. It’s just a short 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns before you’re barefoot in the sand, with a drink in hand.
There is plenty to do on the island, from bush walks, visits to the turtle rehabilitation centre, or paying the Dive Centre a visit. There are lots of other great activities to choose from here.
One of those great activities includes a sail on board Eye Spy – Fitzroy’s resident sailing vessel. Guests can hop on board for a Scenic Sail in the afternoon, or you might like to end the day with a Sunset Sail. While on board, light snacks are included, as well as a welcome soft drink. As well as taking in the island views, you’ll sail past beautiful Nudey Beach, voted 2018’s Best Beach in Australia by Brad Farmer.
Once you’re back on land, the rooms at the Fitzroy Island resort are the perfect spot to while away the afternoon. When it’s time to make it back to the mainland, the Fitzroy Flyer ferry will get you there.
Despite what you might think, the sight of the city doesn’t mean your reef experiences have to stop – however, you won’t be needing your togs to enjoy this treat!
The “Edible Reef” is a delicate dessert creation by the Pullman Cairns International’s Head Pastry Chef, Melanie Day. It’s one of the many delicious items on the hotel’s High Tea menu, which can be enjoyed daily at Coco’s Kitchen and Bar.
The rooms at the Pullman are spacious (40 square metres to be exact!) and have all the “home-away-from-home” essentials. There’s also the on-site Vie Spa if you’re in need of a bit of pampering. After all, an island holiday with sea air really does take it out of you, doesn’t it? It’s a tough life!
