Yumeji Japanese Retreat is a relatively new addition to the array of guest houses, hotels and bed & breakfasts on beautiful Tamborine Mountain – offering an experience that will instantly transport you to the Land of the Rising Sun.
Hosts, Louise and Hideyo Yonezawa, have long had the dream of bringing a little of their beloved Japan to the mountain. The result is a B & B that’s a respectful bow to all things Japanese.
There are three suites – including a traditional Tsuru, with futon beds, tatami mat floors and authentic Japanese furnishings and décor. The Tsuru also comes with a traditional Hinokiburo – or cypress bath.
Other guest rooms feature Japanese décor but include Queen-sized beds for those not quite game enough to sleep on the floor!
A stay at Yumeji includes breakfast, of course – and you can opt for a familiar western-style brekky of muffins, yoghurt and juice – or head to the traditional dining room for an extraordinary Japanese breakfast, created by Hideyo.
Deep-fried bean curd… green tea noodles… Japanese omelette… smoked tuna… spinach in white sesame… and grilled salmon in miso… are just some of the unexpected treats for those uninitiated in traditional Japanese fare.
Louise and Hideyo have mastered the art of ‘omotenashi’ – which translates to Japanese hospitality that comes from the heart.
A stay in the Tsuru at Yumeji Japanese Retreat starts from $290 per night, mid-week.
