About 75 minutes’ drive west of Brisbane is the little town of Coominya – a typically modest country community with a pub, post office, general store and public park.
What you don’t expect to find at Coominya is one of Queensland’s most gracious heritage homes: ‘Bellevue’ Homestead.
‘Bellevue’ dates back to the 1840’s when it was part of the Wivenhoe Run – a vast, 38,000 acre cattle property. The heritage home was moved to higher ground in 1975 when construction of the Wivenhoe Dam threatened to submerge it under 30 feet of water.
Listed with the National Trust, the homestead has had several contemporary owners who’ve largely restored this classic homestead to its original glory.
‘Bellevue’ is reputedly haunted by a drowned horse trainer and has welcomed the well-to-do and well known, including poet Banjo Paterson and the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII.
Tours of the homestead are held on Sundays. Silver service dinners in the grand dining room can be arranged, by appointment.
