The Bunya Mountains lie about three hours’ drive north-west of Brisbane – and they’re home to the world’s biggest forest of Bunya Pines. Winter is a wonderful time to visit. At 1,000 metres above sea level, the Bunyas get properly cold – so you can break out the beanie, gloves, scarf and parka.
Rugging up is recommended if you’ve booked a ride on the Bunya’s answer to an open-air tour bus. Allan Govan and his mighty draught horses are an institution on the mountain. For three decades, they’ve been taking visitors on tours of the local attractions.
Another ‘must-do’ activity while you’re in the Bunyas is the daily feeding of wild parrots. Five dollars will buy you a plate of seed and front row at a feathered frenzy that’s sure to make you smile. Birds aren’t the only visitors getting a good feed in the Bunyas. Head to the Coffee Shop & Tavern to try hearty meals, including dishes featuring the local delicacy – Bunya Nuts. Or dress up for dinner at Lyrics Restaurant which includes the country’s highest whiskey bar.
