It’s so important to ensure you are maintaining the correct tyre pressure when towing a caravan which can often be looked over. Not only will the correct tyre pressure optimise the performance of how your van tows but also increases your fuel efficiency.
First things first, you want to know what tyres your caravan is fitted with. On the sidewall of every tyre an alpha-numerical code can be found, this will tell you all the information you need to research your tyres. Next, you want assess the condition of each tyre, is there any tread left? Are they worn down? Are all tyres the same type? These are the sort of questions you need to know before hitting the road.
Remember that alpha-numerical code? Apart from that number telling you the width, height and diameter of the tyre it also tells you the load index (LI) and psi. The load index represents the maximum load each tyre can carry at its maximum speed when inflated accurately. The psi is the maximum inflation pressure which your tyres should be set at. In your caravan owner’s manual or on the tyre placard inside your van you will find the recommended psi.
Use an air gauge to check the inflation levels of you tyres, a visual representation is a good start but is not an accurate way to measure the psi. You do not want to exceed or drop below the recommend pressure level as this could result in an accident.
Go for a short drive and come back and check your tyres, if you see a rise above 5 psi, you tyre are a little soft so you can put a few more pounds in at a time. Get into a habit of checking and adjusting your tyres regularly.
Before your journey, make sure you have a spare tyre that is in good condition that is same type of tyre that is already fitted for your caravan.
Don’t drive on underinflated or overinflated tyres as this can cause damage to your tyres, steering and breaking performance as well as minimise an accident.
Visit your local caravan dealer if you have any concerns before you set off, they will be happy to help you!
