Exploring Townsville Islands

Townsville in tropical north Queensland is famous for its 320 days (on average) of glorious sunshine per year. But that’s not all it can boast about. It’s CBD is buzzing with new restaurants and shops. It’s a great launch pad for exploring the Great Barrier Reef. And last, but certainly not least, just off shore are two tropical island paradises.

Magnetic Island is just a 20 minute ferry ride from Townsville with Sealink Ferries. They have regular services to Magnetic Island and Palm island.

Once on Magnetic Island, a great place to stay is Peppers Blue on Blue. It’s just metres from the ferry terminal and has accommodation to suit all tastes and a giant pool, restaurant and day spa.

A great way to get around Magnetic Island is with Tropical Topless Car Rentals.

For those who want to get active whilst staying on Magnetic Island, Destination Adventure offer a range of options. There are mountain bike tours, yoga retreats, ocean paddling, running retreats and a whole lot more. It’s one of the best way to see the island’s beauty spots.

Palm Island Centenary 2018

This year, Palm Island held a series of events to mark the centenary of the first placement of people on the Island, to reflect on the past and celebrate the present and future.

Palm Island is a tropical island paradise with a troubled past. For much of the last century, it operated as a mission for forcibly removed Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people. Recently that history was reflected upon and the community celebrated with the Palm Island Centenary Festival.

The island often hosts open days where locals put on markets, food and music. Sealink Ferries offer day trips to Palm island and the journey takes about two hours. Whilst on Palm Island, a great place to stay is at the Palm Island Motel. It has comfortable rooms and is close to all the main attractions.

When in Townsville, agood place to base oneself is at the terrific Grand Hotel and Apartments. They are right in the CBD, close to shops and restaurants and all the main tourist attractions.
