If there are two things that Queenslanders worship, it’s sunshine and beer. Put them together and you can’t help but have a winning combination.
That’s exactly what Helios Brewing Company at Yeerongpilly in Brisbane has done – using solar power to brew a slew of award-winning craft beers.
Owner and founder, Scott Shomer, is an environmental engineer who took on the challenge of creating a boutique brewery that’s as sustainable as it can possibly be.
Beyond solar power and solar thermal technology, the micro-brewery uses a 100% electric-powered van to deliver beer to clients and sells beer in 100% recyclable aluminium cans emblazoned with similarly recyclable aluminium labels.
The beer range is a nod to Greek mythology. Zeus, Poseidon, Hades and Cyclops are just a few of the memorable drops made at Helios (which, by the way, is the moniker ancient Greeks gave the god of the sun.)
In the 4 years since opening, Helios Brewing has won many awards – including the 2021 Lord Mayor’s Business Award for Environmental Sustainability in Business.
Helios Brewing opens to the public 4 days a week: Thursday 4pm – 9pm; Friday 12pm – 9pm; Saturday 12pm – 9pm; and Sunday 12pm – 5.30pm.
Tasting crates are available and there’s usually live music and street food vans on site.
