Howard Smith Wharves: Hospitality that’s helping the planet

Whether you’re after a cold beer on a hot summer’s day, or a spot to brunch with friends, there aren’t many places that beat this foodie precinct. Howard Smith Wharves has become an attraction, not to be missed in Brisbane, and it’s easy to see why.

What once was a working wharf, in the 1930s, the area has now been transformed. After years of careful and meticulous restoration work, it opened again in 2018, but this time as a lively restaurant hub. There are 13 restaurants and cafes, and a hotel. That includes its very own brewery, Felon’s, which was inspired by the adventures of four convicts.

Last year the Wharves was recognised at the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards. It took home the prize in the Better Brisbane category, which celebrates businesses for their contribution to the city. On the surface it might seem like this is just a bustling meeting point to catch up for a cocktail, but there’s more to this spot than meets the eye.

Howard Smith Wharves is doing important work for our community. It’s made sustainability a key focus, with 96% of the waste produced here, being diverted from landfill. Oyster shells are sorted, and taken to Moreton Bay, where they’re made into artificial reefs. While other food waste, is turned into compost.

Luke Frazer is the Chief Executive Officer at Howard Smith Wharves.  He says he can’t wait for what the future holds and hopes one day it will be the most environmentally sustainable precinct in the world.
