Meet champion jockey turned trainer Chris Munce

Champion jockey Chris Munce has had a successful riding career, having won 42 Group One races including the prestigious Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Golden Slipper and Caulfield Cup.

He recently swapped the saddle for the stables to become a trainer at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse.

Chris is enjoying the new role and said “I’d ridden all my life and probably achieved what I wanted to achieve and was pretty pleased with what I’d done. So, when a jockey retires, they sort of have to assess what they want to do with their lives and I’d always enjoyed being around horses and working with horses and I just thought the obvious step was to become a trainer.”

Chris is proving to be successful on the other side of the fence and is currently looking forward to racing on his home turf at the Channel 7 Brisbane Racing Carnival.

The carnival is on from May 11 – June 8 at Doomben and Eagle Farm and promises five days of legendary horse racing, exquisite fashion, finely crafted food and live entertainment.

Chris says the carnival is a great time for spectators and punters, as well as the local jockeys and trainers to see their hard work paying off.

“It is a labour of love and it’s good to see a horse win a race, no matter if it’s a maiden in the back of nowhere, or major Magic Millions, guineas or group one. It’s a great thrill to know that all the hard work and early morning you’ve put into the horse and you see the horse race and the spectator cheering you on, it’s a great thrill.”
