To see the largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere
In August 2019, the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is back for its 60th year! Clear your calendar from the 8th-11th and head to Mount Isa for the largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere. To see fossils at the Riversleigh Fossil Centre
Fancy yourself a paleontologist? The Riversleigh Fossil Centre is full of fossils from the nearby Riversleigh Fossil Fields. At the centre, there is plenty to see and learn, with video presentations and informative displays all around the museum. There are even laboratory tours twice daily for those wanting to learn more.
Experience life as an underground miner
It can be hard to imagine what life would be like working underground as a miner, but in Mount Isa, you don’t need to wonder. On a Hard Times Mining Tour, you can get dressed up and head underground into a replica mine. Not only will you learn a lot from ex-miners, but you can try using an air-leg drill and feel the earth rumble!
Did you know that Mount Isa has been named the largest city in the world, thanks to its over 43,000 square-kilometre landmass? That isn’t the City’s only claim to fame though – Mount Isa also calls itself home to the longest city road in the world!
To visit an old uranium mine
The Mary Kathleen Mine, between Mount Isa and Cloncurry, is a must-visit for photographers! Aboard a North West Tour, you can visit the old mine, which was exhausted in 1981.
To see the beautiful city lights
If you are ever in Mount Isa, make the effort to visit the City Lookout at night. The view will blow you away… We recommend heading to the lookout just in time for sunset.
