If you are itching for a quick getaway, but at a bit of a loss of where to visit, why not consider the charming city of Rockhampton. Every time we visit the beef capital, we fall a little more in love with its’ beautiful heritage, fascinating rodeo culture, and people.
Here are eight experiences that are uniquely Rocky that we can guarantee you will love!
1. Watch the rodeo
The Great Western Hotel in Rockhampton is a beautiful old pub, home to Australia’s only indoor rodeo arena. The iconic pub was established in 1862 and has a long and rich history of live entertainment and fun times. Be sure to time your visit with the rodeo, which is on every Wednesday and Friday night, and try a steak while you are watching the fun unfold.
2. Wander along historic Quay Street
Rockhampton’s history stretches back to 1880s when gold was discovered on Mount Morgan. The gold meant the town flourished, and today many beautiful heritage buildings are reminiscent of that time. When you are in Rocky, be sure to take a walk along Quay Street, along the Fitzroy River to see the 26 National Trust buildings.
3. Watch the sunset over the city
If you are looking for that Insta-worthy sunset snap, hike up Mount Archer at dusk for beautiful views of the city and surrounds. Trust us, the views are worth every step!
4. Explore a Cave
30 minutes north of Rockhampton, are the Capricorn Caves. The Capricorn Caves are a magnificent sight to see, with the Cathedral Cave Tour being the most popular cave to explore. You might even spot a bat as you weave through the labyrinth.
5. Koorana Crocodile Farm
Koorana Crocodile Farm is a ‘snappy’ attraction, just half an hour from Rocky. At the Farm, you can visit the 4000 crocodiles that live there, see them hatch between March and May and shop and eat.
6. Take a step back in time…
Take a step back in time at Rockhampton Heritage Village, a beautiful historical village showcasing what life in Rockhampton was like between 1850-1950. The Heritage Village is a great place to spend a day, checking out old cars, vintage tools, historical homes, and cute farm animals.

7. Get cultured at the Rockhampton Art Gallery
If you are the arty-kind, the art gallery in Rockhampton is a must-visit. At the Rockhampton Art Gallery, you will find a fantastic collection of mid-twentieth century Australian art, such as the works of Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan and Margaret Olley, just to name a few.
8. Take a ride on a steam tram…
If you have not seen enough history yet, visit the Archer Park Rail Museum, and take a ride on the historic Purrey Steam Tram. Kids will love it!
